I do not speak German. I have no idea what the hell is going on on this record. “Jingle Bells” is entirely in German, except for the words ‘jingle’ and ‘bells’. On the contrast, “White Christmas” is in English. The choral arrangement is mostly big, sloppy unison with a little bit of ahh and ooh harmony in the background. The interior booklet is a joke. The back cover’s gold text on purple evokes the Lakers more than it does Yule logs.
There are a couple of traditional German carols on here that I wouldn’t have otherwise heard, but I would bet good money that there are way more of them, way better performed if I only dug for them. The mix is fine, and evokes the old-style carols you still hear on christmas radio sometimes. Overall, this record is better when it leans into the pomp and power of traditional religious christmas. Its renditions of commercial American christmas tunes are surreal, and not in a complimentary way.
Weihnachten Mit Den Fischer-Chören is a bad album, and I don’t like it.
